One of my favorite places to hike during the spring and winter months in Windwolves Preserve. It's a 30 minute drive from Bakersfield California, which makes it an easy destination for me since I only live 20 minutes away. And best of all, almost everytime go there, I am the only person there and that is saying much because usually I am there once a month.
The reason why it is a favorite is because during spring wild flowers turn the whole mountain side purple and orange. It's unbelievably beautiful. And everytime I go I always see herds of deer.... and squirels. Something very interesting for those that are up to an 8 mile round trip hike. You can head up to the reflection pond to find literally one hundred native american grinding holes - definitly my favorite spot at Windwolves.
There are many different paths and places you can hike to at Windwolves, some hikes can be half a mile while some longer ones are like the 8 mile round hike to reflection pond. There are two other hikes that are a little bit longer than the trip to Reflection pond but I would not recommend it until you have checked out the Reflection pond.
It's worth checking Windwolves out if you live in and around Kern County.
